Malda teachers on hunger strike.

Demanding early publication of teachers’ recruitment exam results, around 50 candidates who have been seeking jobs in primary schools of Malda have been on a hunger-strike in front of the administrative building at the district magistrate’s office since the past six days.

The job-seekers were on strike there even on the day Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the district on Tuesday last. “Opposition party leaders from the Congress, the RSP and the BJP visited the hunger-strikers.

However, neither the district magistrate, Kaushik Bhattacharya, nor the district primary school council chairman, Ashis Kundu, have met them till date. A number of agitators have fallen ill, while others are still going strong on their strike,” sources said.

It may be noted here that the agitators had appeared in the primary school teachers’ recruitment exam in 2009, which was later retaken in 2014, and the results for which are yet to be published.

According to the agitators, they had received a verdict from the High Court in September 2017, instructing the Malda District Primary School Council to publish the results which is allegedly withheld by the chairman.

They added that they had knocked every single door to have the results published, but in vain, leaving no other option for them but to go for a hunger strike. “The officials could have visited us, at least, on humanitarian grounds, but they didn’t care to do so,” said one of the job-seekers. When contacted for comment, Mr Bhattacharya and Mr Kundu, both, said that the matter was sub-judice.
