Army officer seriously injured in bear attack

A bear entered army campus and injured an officer in Uttarakhand. The officer, who sustained serious injury in a black bear attack, was airlifted from Joshimath (Chamoli) to New Delhi for advanced medical care on Friday.

The bear strayed into army campus on Thursday evening triggering panic among the residents. Colonel DK Acharya was seriously injured in the bear attack.

Bears become active in many parts of Uttarakhand ahead of the winters. Chamoli forest department’s sub divisional officer Tirlok Singh Sahi said, “The incident took place at 6-7 pm on Thursday. The bear had entered the army campus.”

In a similar incident, five Jawans had suffered injuries in bear attack at ITBP campus in Joshimath two years back.

Leopards and bears have previously caused harm to human life in Uttarakhand.

According to Uttarakhand forest department’s data from 9 November 2000 to December 2014, bears have killed 19 and injured 391 in different parts of the hill state.

Leopards have been the cause of deaths of 241 persons and injuries to 408. Elephants have killed 107 persons and injured 65, whereas 16 persons have lost their lives in tiger attacks while 23 people have been injured.
