Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday urged External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to raise the issue with US authorities regarding the murder of a Punjabi-origin youth in San Francisco.

The 21-year-old Dharampreet Singh, who had hid himself behind the cash counter when the robbers came, was shot by one of the four robbers as they were leaving after looting a petrol pump near San Francisco on Tuesday.

“Shocked at the gruesome killing of Nawanshahr’s Dharampreet Singh in California. Sushma Swarajji, request you to take up the issue at highest level with US authorities to ensure justice for the family,” Punjab CM Amarinder tweeted on Thursday.

Dharampreet had moved to the US in February of 2015 and was working as a part-time employee at a petrol pump.

Hate crimes against Sikhs have increased in different parts of the US.
