Mr Ghosh had to face demonstration from his own partymen as he left the district for the New Jalpaiguri Railway station at Jateswar under the Falakata police station in the district on Sunday.

Mr Ghosh on Sunday held a meeting on rural elections at Jateswar’s Sukanta Bhaban where more than 500 party activists from all corners of the district attended.

More than 100 BJP workers under Sunil Mahato, who has been suspended for six years from the party, stopped the car of the state BJP president and demanded withdrawal of the suspension order.

Mahato’s suspension followed his wife’s allegations that party leaders molested her. She has also filed a complaint at the Kumargrame police station on 20 March.

Mr Mahato was the president of the Kumargrame No-3 mandal of the BJP, it is learnt. The president of the BJP’s Alipurduar district committee, Ganga Prasad Sharma, issued a press release on Monday and announced the names of the eight leaders who were suspended for taking part in the demonstration on Sunday. All the suspended leaders are from the Kumargrame Block, it is learnt.

“To stop the state president of our party and to organize a demonstration is a gross violation of the party discipline. As such, we suspended eight of our leaders who took part in the protest,” Mr Sharma said.

“We have taken consent from the state leadership regarding the suspension, and did it as our state leader directed us to do,” he added. Political souorces meanwhile said, the suspension will harm the BJP in the upcoming rural elections in the district.

“We don’t want to comment on it as it is the BJP’s internal matter. But we will help Mr Mahato if he wants because the matter of the molestation of his wife is very serious,” the district president of the ruling party, Trinamul Congress, Mohan Sharma, said.
