In an attempt to solve faculty crunch in the country, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has developed e-learning courses in health and medicine sciences using virtual teaching.

Dr Manoj Singh, professor of pathology department, AIIMS, said that this kind of supplemental teaching material would be helpful for MBBS, nursing and paramedical students.

The initiative funded by the NKN (national knowledge network) initially, will be implemented in seven medical colleges across the country as a pilot project.

According to Dr Singh teaching of basic medical and laboratory skills remain underdeveloped in India. “These teaching modules would help medical professionals in learning correct technique of measuring pulse rate, blood pressure among others,” Dr Singh said.

Dr Singh said that these modules would also help to train community health workers. “A logical corollary is the application of these skills teaching formats to try and train village level health workers to carry out simple healthcare tests in the community. This type of teaching has immense use in the maintenance of hygiene in the environment,” said Dr Singh.
