Following Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena’s push to improve traffic management across the national capital and strengthen road safety, Delhi Police have intensified enforcement measures.

According to an assessment of the overall enforcement data presented to the LG, prosecutions for wrong-side driving increased by 98 per cent, rising from 1,72,879 challans in June 2025 to 3,42,381 challans issued up to June 25, 2026.

The Lieutenant Governor recently reviewed the progress of traffic enforcement measures across the city at a meeting attended by the Delhi Police Commissioner and other senior police officers.

The L-G emphasized that improving Delhi’s traffic flow is crucial not only to save time and fuel but, more importantly, to reduce pollution and ensure road safety.

Similarly, action against unauthorized parking also witnessed a sharp rise. The number of challans issued for unauthorized parking increased by 36.5 per cent, from 7,78,258 to 10,62,350 during the same period.

Additionally, 2,033 FIRs were registered for wrong-side driving between January 1 and June 25, 2026.

During the review, the LG also stressed the need for stricter enforcement against helmetless riding and triple riding on two-wheelers, both of which are critical road safety concerns.

Reviewing the zone-wise enforcement data, the LG noted substantial action across different police ranges.

The Eastern Range, which covers some of the city’s most congested and densely populated areas, recorded the highest proportional increase in prosecutions for wrong-side driving, with a 189 per cent rise—from 33,413 to 96,472 challans. It also registered a 103 per cent increase in unauthorized parking challans, from 1,13,070 to 2,29,313, besides the registration of 397 FIRs for wrong-side driving.

The Northern Range recorded a 128 per cent increase in wrong-side driving challans, rising from 11,037 to 25,251, along with 410 FIRs. Unauthorized parking challans in the range increased by 51.5 per cent, from 41,805 to 63,338.

The Central Range registered an 81.5 per cent increase in action against wrong-side driving, with challans rising from 69,149 to 1,25,441, accompanied by 334 FIRs. Challans for unauthorized parking nearly doubled, increasing by 98 per cent from 94,945 to 1,88,116.

The L-G was also apprised of enforcement figures from the remaining zones. The New Delhi Range recorded a 105 per cent increase in wrong-side driving challans, rising from 11,140 to 22,901. Enforcement against unauthorized parking also increased by 13 per cent, with challans rising from 1,95,293 to 2,21,226.

Reviewing broader anti-encroachment initiatives undertaken by Delhi Police in coordination with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Traders Associations (MTAs), and civic agencies during foot patrols, the LG noted that 4,900 special joint drives were conducted between January and June 2026.

These drives resulted in the issuance of 3.9 lakh challans for improper parking, helping clear pedestrian walkways and vehicular carriageways across the city.
