A 34-year-old e-rickshaw driver was arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of a minor schoolgirl after his vehicle overturned in Maujpur, which lies in the northeast of Delhi, police said on Saturday.
The accused, Shahnwaz, a resident of Babarpur, was identified through CCTV footage and local intelligence, police said, adding that the vehicle was also seized.
The incident came to light on Thursday, when an e-rickshaw collided with a motorcycle and subsequently overturned at around 7:30 a.m.
A senior officer said, “We were informed about the incident after the authorities from GTB hospital reported that a minor had been brought to the premises who had been declared brought dead.”
The deceased was a third-grade student at a private school who was travelling with her mother in the e-rickshaw when it collided with a motorcycle and then overturned before reaching Maujpur Chowk.
With the information, a case was registered under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Jafrabad Police Station.
While probing into this case, the team reviewed multiple CCTV footage and gathered intel from the vicinity to ascertain the identity of the culprit.
Eyewitnesses told the officers that the driver of the E-rickshaw was driving it at high speed before the collision.
“Immediately after the incident, the driver fled the scene. CCTV of the area is currently being scanned by our team to ascertain the identity of the accused,” the officer mentioned.
As per the statement of the officer, the accused will be questioned to establish the sequence of events leading to the accident.
“The e-rickshaw has been seized as part of the evidence,” the police said, adding that further investigation is underway, he further stated.
