Nearly 35 houses were destroyed and several other were partially damaged in a fire that rendered more than 50 families shelterless at Kashaini village under the Tikkar panchayat in Rohru subdivision of Shimla district, about 125 km from here, in the wee hours of Wednesday.
As per reports, the fire broke out at around 2 am and engulfed a large number of houses within no time, giving the residents little time to remove their belongings to safety. The villagers tried to control the fire on their own but dozens of houses had been reduced to ashes by the time fire tenders reached the spot.
It was after concerted efforts of hundreds of people who had converged from far and near that the blaze was stopped from spreading into a cluster of 150 houses. The Rohru SDM and DSP reached the spot along with rescue teams.
