Nearly 35 houses were destroyed and several other were partially damaged in a fire that rendered more than 50 families shelterless at Kashaini village under the Tikkar panchayat in Rohru subdivision of Shimla district, about 125 km from here, in the wee hours of Wednesday.

As per reports, the fire broke out at around 2 am and engulfed a large number of houses within no time, giving the residents little time to remove their belongings to safety. The villagers tried to control the fire on their own but dozens of houses had been reduced to ashes by the time fire tenders reached the spot.

As per a report in The Tribune, property worth crores was destroyed in the fierce fire but there was no loss of life and the villagers rushed out of their homes as soon as the fire broke out. The loss is being assessed by the revenue officers and victims have been given immediate relief of Rs 10,000 each besides temporary shelter, ration, clothes and other essential items, said SDM Rohru Babu Ram Sharma.

Fire accidents are a major concern in the hills where houses are made of wood and most villages don’t have connecting roads for fire tenders to come to their rescue.
