The Berhampur (Nilgiri) police of Balasore district arrested five people including a couple and a former ZP member in a connection with a gang rape of a 15 -year -old girl.

The victim belonging to Kaptipada of Mayurbhanj district was missing. The OIC of the police station, Mr Gopal Singh said, “The accused people were identified as Dhaniram Singh (48) (former ZP member), Sunaram Singh (37) and his wife Lily Singh (32 ),Susanta Singh (27) and Badal Singh (20)”.

Singh said, “The accused people except Lily Singh were booked under section 376(2)(i)(n) and Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) while, Lily Singh is booked under section 109(abetment).”

“They would be forwarded to court later on after completion of their medical examinations. The search for the victim is on and she would be traced soon,” said Singh.

According to sources the victim of Kaptipada was given shelter by Bari Hembram after he found her in distress about 20 days ago near Berhampur bus stand.

During her stay in Hembram house she got married to Sunaram Singh, a man having wife and three children on 11 March.

On 16th night Sunaram and others three hatching a conspiracy took the victim out in the pretext that she would be taken to Bari Hembram house.

On the way the accused persons Dhaniram, Sunaram, Susana and Badal raped her in Kuldhia forest.

Next day on 17 March they left her in Kaptipada bus stand.The matter came to light when a fellow villagers asked Sunaram about the whereabouts of his second wife.

When he could not reply, they beat him and he named the three accomplices. On Tuesday, the villagers caught hold of all the four accused persons and tied them up.

They were thrashed by the villagers before the police reached the spot, and arrested them.

During an interrogation they confessed to the crime said by Singh adding that they have informed their counter parts at Kaptipada to look for the victim girl.
