At least eleven merrymakers were lucky enough to have been rescued after being swept away while bathing in Sultangarh waterfall in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday night.

Senior police officer Rajesh Hingankar said that in total 45 people, including the 11 who were swept away by strong currents, have been rescued. The rescue operation continued for several hours last night.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in a late night tweet, said, “Happy to share that collective efforts of BSF, SDRF, Police, Homeguards & locals of Shivpuri district has paid off. Everyone from the Sultangarh Water Fall have been rescued. Heartily thank @nstomar ji, who supervised the rescue operations. My deep gratitude to everyone invovled.”

The helicopter, in its first sortie, rescued five persons who were stranded on a rock in the water downstream, while two more were saved by local people.

The waterfall is near Mohana village, 55 km from the district headquarters, in an area bordering Gwalior district.

Tourists had thronged the place on Wednesday due to the Independence Day holiday.

There was a sudden surge in water around 4.30 pm, possibly due to heavy rain upstream, catching those bathing in the waterfall unawares, police said quoting the locals.

Union minister and Gwalior MP Narendra Singh Tomar had visited the spot after learning the news. He stayed at the spot and supervised the rescue efforts.

Senior officials, including Gwalior range Inspector General of Police Anshuman S Yadav and Shivpuri collector Shilpa Gupta, were also present at the site.
