2 terrorists killed; separatists issue protest calendar

Two terrorists of the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were on Monday killed in an encounter with security forces in the Behmnoo village of Pulwama district in the South Kashsmir. Another terrorist is believed holed up in the area and the security forces were trying to eliminate him.

A large number of people from the nearby 25 villages assembled at the encounter site and pelted stones at the security forces in a bid to hamper the action against terrorists. One person is learnt to have received bullet injury when the police fired at them to disperse the unruly mob.

In another incident, an unarmed policeman Ghulam Hassan was injured in the neck when terrorists indiscriminately fired at him in the bus stand area. A woman was also wounded in the firing and both injured have been shifted to the hospital at Srinagar.

Operations against terrorists have been stepped up in the South Kashmir by the security forces that have eliminated three top terrorists.

The pro-Pakistan separatist leaders are trying to further incite violence particularly in the South Kashmir where Pahalgam is the base camp for the 40 days Amarnath pilgrimage. Their latest strategy is a protest calendar calling for 16 days shutdown to observe the first death anniversary of the terrorist Burhan Wani who was killed on 8 July last year in an encounter with security forces.

According to the calendar issued by the separatists, the protest will begin on July 8 with a march to Tral in South Kashmir that was the native place of Burhan. Thereafter, the protest march will be held at Pampore, Bijbehara, pulwama, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Budgam, Chadoora and Sopore where terrorists were killed in recent encounters.

Meanwhile, one of the terrorists killed today has been identified as Kifayat. The security forces cordoned the village Behmnoo after receiving inputs about presence of three terrorists there and the encounter began early in the morning. Mobile phone and internet services have been suspended in the area to prevent spreading of rumours. Train service has also been suspended in South Kashmir.

The operation has come just a few hours after the one at Malangpora in Pulwama where residents of the villages helped them escape the cordon of the security forces.
