Two naxals carrying a reward on their head were killed in an encounter with security forces on Saturday night.
The naxals were identified as Sanjib, a divisional committee member of the CPI ( Maoist), who carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh; and Rakesh, an area commander of Bolangir-Bargarh-Mahasamund Division, carrying a reward of Rs 4 lakh.
An AK47 rifle, Insas rifle, and ammunition were seized from the spot.
Based on actionable intelligence inputs, security forces, along with special operation group and district voluntary force led by Bolangir SP K Siba Subramani, raided a house near Dudkamal village where the left wing extremists were camping.
There were 10 to 12 extremist in the house when the police team reached the spot. They opened fire and fled to the nearby Boinda forests.
Sanjib and Rakesh were killed. Police carried the bodies to Belpada police station. The SP said though some of the naxals managed to escape, the operation was a success.
Odisha DGP RP Sharma told reporters in Bhubaneswar that the encounter was a  major success for Odisha police as the operation was executed meticulously.
“Seven Maoists were killed in three anti-naxal operations last year and special action plan being prepared for similar operations in inaccessible areas  said,” DGP RP Sharma said.
Such operations boost the morale of the police force and dealt a blow to the left wing extremists, he said.
