At least two firemen were injured in massive fire which broke out in an abandoned five-storey building as a portion of it collapsed in Mumbai early on Saturday, an official said.

The injured firemen were rushed to a hospital. No one is believed to be trapped inside the building.

The inferno destroyed the dilapidated and vacant Kothari Building in Fort area of Central Business District around 4 am.

According to officials, serious tragedy was averted as a group of firemen involved in firefighting operation had moved to safe distance just before the portion of the building collapsed on the two fire vehicles where they were standing. A fire brigade tanker and a specialised equipment unit were also damaged when the portion of the building collapsed.

The cause of the fire is not known yet.

As a team of firemen rushed to fight the conflagration, the blaze spread and reportedly came in contact with some old electrical appliances and fittings lying there.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Cell said the building was abandoned more than five years ago after its main staircase crashed, rendering it unfit for habitation.

The fire-fighters took precaution to control the blaze from outside with the water curtain and didn’t allow it to spread to adjoining buildings in the congested area.
