India’s Wholesale Inflation in October stays negative for the fourth month with the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) falling at 1.21%.

Negative rate of inflation in October, 2025 is primarily due to decrease in prices of food articles, crude petroleum & natural gas, electricity, mineral oils and manufacture of basic metals etc, data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said.

WPI-based inflation was 0.13% in September and 2.75% in October last year. The month over month change in WPI for the month of October, 2025 stood at (-) 0.06% as compared to September, 2025.

The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased to (-) 5.04% in October from (-) 1.99% in September.

Price of Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (-3.13%) and non-food articles (-1.73%) decreased in October, 2025 as compared to September, 2025. The Price of minerals (1.72%) increased in October, 2025 as compared to September, 2025. The price of food articles remained the same as in the previous month.

The price of electricity (2.89%), mineral oil (0.67%) increased in October, 2025 as compared to September, 2025. The price of coal remained the same as in the previous month.

Vegetable prices declined 34.97%, a deeper fall than September’s 24.41%. Pulses registered 16.50% deflation, while potato and onion prices declined 39.88% and 65.43%, respectively.

The ministry said the decline in WPI inflation was expected following the reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates effective September 22, when mass-consumption items were moved into lower 5% and 18% tax slabs.

The GST cuts, along with a favourable base, have pulled down both wholesale and retail inflation.
