UPI transactions in August grow by 3% to 20.01 billion

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in August grew 3% to 20.01 billion, up from 19.47 billion in July. Further, in value terms, transactions dipped 1% to Rs 24.85 trillion from Rs 25.08 trillion in July.

According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the daily transactions in August averaged 645 million, compared with 628 million in July. In value terms, however, daily usage fell to Rs 80,177 crore from Rs 80,919 crore the previous month.

FASTag transactions registered a 16% year-on-year (YoY) growth, but saw a sequential decline, falling to 382 million in August 2025 from 371 million in July.

In value terms, collections also moderated, slipping to Rs 70.53 billion in August from Rs 66.69 billion in July.
On a daily basis, however, transaction count inched up to 12.32 million in August, compared to 11.95 million in July, though still lower than the 12.88 million recorded in June.

FASTag is an RFID-based electronic toll collection system that enables seamless, cashless toll payments.

The Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) volumes grew 5% YoY, with 477 million transactions in August 2025, marginally lower than 482 million in July 2025.

In value terms, IMPS usage rose, reaching Rs 6.31 trillion in August against Rs 5.98 trillion in July.

IMPS is a real-time interbank electronic fund transfer system that allows instant money transfers via mobile, internet banking, and ATMs.

Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions surged, posting a 28% YoY increase. Transaction volumes expanded to 128.17 million in August 2025, up from 103 million in July.

In value terms, AePS transactions also climbed, rising to Rs 323.29 billion in August compared to Rs 265.85 billion in July.

AePS leverages Aadhaar authentication to facilitate banking transactions, playing a key role in advancing financial inclusion, particularly in rural regions.
