Union Tourism Ministry on Wednesday said that the foreign tourist arrivals on e-tourist visas have jumped 219 per cent in July 2016.

“A total of 68,487 tourists arrived in July 2016 on e-tourist visa as compared to 21,476 in July 2015, registering a growth of 218.9 per cent,” the ministry stated. 

Meanwhile, during January to July 2016 the growth was 266 per cent higher compared to the same period last year.

“A total of 5,40,396 tourist arrived on e-Tourist Visa as compared to 1,47,690 during January-July 2015,” the ministry added. 

Among major contributors in tourist arrivals, UK occupied the top slot with a growth of 17.7 per cent followed by USA (16.2 per cent) and UAE (5.9 per cent).

China (5.4 per cent), Spain (4.0 per cent), Australia (3.9 per cent), Germany (3.5per cent), Canada (3.4 per cent) and Netherlands (2.9 per cent) were major contributors.

Port wise, New Delhi airport witnessed the highest growth of 44 per cent in tourist arrivals on e-tourist visas followed by Mumbai airport (20.77 per cent), Chennai airport (9.43 per cent), Bengaluru airport (9.1 per cent), Kochi airport (5.1 per cent) and Hyderabad airport (6.68 per cent).

Commencing from November 27, 2014, e-tourist visa facility was available until February 25, 2016 for citizens of 113 countries arriving at 16 airports in India.

On February 26, 2016, the Union government extended this scheme for citizens of 37 more countries taking the tally to 150 countries.
