Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is expected to remain nearly stable despite a slight decline in sugarcane acreage during this 2025-26 season.

As per preliminary estimates from the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), sugar production in Uttar Pradesh may increase by about 2 per cent in 2025-26. According to officials, however, this increase will not be enough to keep Uttar Pradesh as the country’s top producer, as Maharashtra is projected to see a significant jump in production.

ISMA has projected an 18.5 per cent increase in sugar production nationwide. According to the report, sugar production in Maharashtra could increase by 39 per cent, an increase from last year.

In 2024-25, Uttar Pradesh produced 101 lakh metric tonnes of sugar, surpassing Maharashtra (93.51 LMT). However, Maharashtra’s sugar mills are progressing rapidly in the current season (2025-26).

ISMA estimates that Maharashtra’s production could increase to 130 LMT, driven by a strong monsoon, improved water availability, and increased acreage.

In Uttar Pradesh, sugarcane acreage has declined to 2.257 million hectares from 2.33 million hectares. Despite this, production in the state is expected to reach approximately 10.3 million metric tonnes. According to agricultural experts, improved disease management and the use of new high-yielding varieties have improved sugarcane quality.

The state government recently increased the MSP of sugarcane by Rs 30 per quintal, which is expected to provide relief to farmers. The government has also launched several new schemes to strengthen the sugar industry and increase sugarcane farmers’ income.

According to sugarcane industry sources, more than two dozen mills in western Uttar Pradesh have become operational at the start of the current crushing season. Initial reports also indicate improved sugar recovery rates. It has risen from 9 per cent to 9.3 per cent, and is expected to improve further as crushing progresses.
