Sensex plunges 699 pts, Nifty closes below 8,300

Shaving off Thursday’s gains amid weak Asian and European
markets, domestic bourses closed Friday’s trading session with deep cuts.

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) closed 699
points down at 26,819 and the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ended
229 points lower at 8,296.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices, BSE
Smallcap and Midcaps indices plunged around 3.5 per cent each.

All the BSE sectoral indices closed in the negative zone
with Auto index leading the declines, down 4.5 per cent.

On Thursday, the Sensex had closed 265 points higher at
27,743 while the Nifty had closed 94 point up at 8,526.

Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: Sun Pharma (up 3.3 per
cent) and HDFC Bank (up 0.3 per cent).

Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: M&M (down 6 per cent),
Adani Ports (down 5.9 per cent), ICICI Bank (down 5.3 per cent), Hero Motocorp
(down 5.2 per cent) and Asian Paints (down 5 per cent).

Meanwhile, the Rupee was trading 55 paisa down at 67.18
against the US Dollar.
