Extending declines for fifth straight session, domestic equity markets closed Tuesday’s volatile trading session in the negative zone.

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended 67 points down at 26,308 and the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed 22 points lower at 8,082.

Broader markets underperformed the benchmark indices, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices plunged 1.4 per cent and 0.9 per cent respectively.

Among the BSE sectoral indices, IT index closed with the biggest gain, up 1 per cent, while Bankex index ended with the biggest decline, down 1.3 per cent.

On Monday, the Sensex had closed 115 points down at 26,375 and the Nifty had ended 35 points lower at 8,104.

Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: TCS (up 2.2 per cent), Gail (up 1.1 per cent), ITC (up 1.1 per cent), Coal India (up 1 per cent) and ITC (up 1 per cent).

Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: SBI (down 2.6 per cent), ICICI Bank (down 2.2 per cent), Bajaj Auto (down 2.1 per cent), Lupin (down 1.7 per cent) and Tata Steel (down 1.7 per cent).

However, the Rupee was trading 16 paise down at 68.03 against the US Dollar.
