Amid strong cues from Asian peers, Indian equity markets started Thursday&’s trading session with sharp gains.
At 9.45 am, the Sensex at the Bombay Stocks Exchange (BSE) was trading 312 points higher at 28,819 while the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was trading 97 points up at 8,874.
In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices jumped over 1 per cent each.
On Wednesday, the Sensex had closed 98 points up at 28,622 and the Nifty had closed 23 points higher at 8,799.
All the BSE sectoral indices, except IT index, were trading in the positive zone with Metal index leading the gains, up by 1.6 per cent. IT index was trading 0.1 per cent down.
Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: Hero Motocorp (up 2.4 per cent), ICICI Bank (up 2.4 per cent), SBI (up 2.1 per cent), Tata Steel (up 2 per cent) and Maruti Suzuki (up 2per cent).
Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: Wipro (down 0.3 per cent), Infosys (down 0.3 per cent) and TCS (down 0.3 per cent).
Meanwhile, the Rupee was trading 15 paise higher at 66.86 against the US Dollar.
