Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Monday that the central bank has formed a committee to look into issues of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

“We have constituted a committee to look into the issues related to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). We are looking at what kind of governance reforms can be brought about in the functioning of the banks,” he said in New Delhi after meeting the representatives of MSMEs.

Das also said that the RBI is “constantly monitoring” the issue of liquidity and is ready to take measures whenever the need arises. But he added that the central bank will not allow a situation where “liquidity becomes a kind of loose money”.

“Any infusion of liquidity will have to be very carefully considered and has to be need-based. So, the caution and care has to be exercised by the RBI, that excess liquidity which sometimes has adverse consequences that is not created,” he added.

He said that after assuming the position as Governor, the RBI has announced additional infusion of liquidity via open market operations (OMOs) of Rs 60,000 crore.

Speaking on non-performing assets (NPAs), Das said that no target has been issued to it but the final decision rests with RBI.

“No target of NPAs has been given to us. There are many issues on which the government and the RBI hold discussions, but the final decision is of the RBI, on matters that are under its domain,” he said.

Das further said that he will meet the representatives of Non-banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) on Tuesday in Mumbai.

“I will meet non-banking financial company (NBFC) representatives in Mumbai tomorrow. We will discuss the liquidity issue of NBFCs. Liquidity conditions are being monitored constantly,” said the RBI Governor.
