In an effort to promote digital payments as the demonetisation move completes a month, the government on Thursday announced 11 steps, including 0.75 per cent discount for purchase of petrol and diesel through digital payment.
The date for implementing the scheme will be notified shortly, Jaitley told media persons.
“As many as 4.5 crore consumers buy petrol and diesel worth Rs.1,800 crore daily; and in one month, digital payments have doubled to 40 per cent,” he said.
The announcement also includes free insurance cover for railway tickets bought online.
“All passengers who buy ticket online will get free insurance cover worth Rs.10 lakh,” Jaitley told the media.
“Dealing with cash has economic as well as in-built cost in a democratic set-up,” he added.
The demonetisation of high value currency notes was announced by the government on November 8 midnight. People across the country has been facing cash crunch since. Hence, the move to promote digital payments would, perhaps, tide the situation.
