With digital payments becoming an integral part of daily life for millions of Indians, experts and authorities are urging users to remain alert and follow basic safety precautions to avoid falling victim to fraud.
While the speed and ease of digital transactions offer unmatched convenience, a lack of awareness can lead to serious financial loss.
Amid this, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has released five essential tips aimed at boosting public awareness around safe digital payment practices.
To ensure secure digital experiences, users are being advised to adopt a few key practices:
Verify Before You Pay: Users should always double-check the recipient’s name before authorising a payment. Confirming the details on the screen can prevent payments from being mistakenly sent to the wrong person or a fraudulent account.
Use Only Trusted Apps and Websites: Officials recommend making payments only through official and widely used applications and websites. Downloading apps or clicking on unknown links shared through messages or social media can expose users to malicious software and scams.
Keep PINs and OTPs Confidential: Security experts emphasize that personal banking information such as UPI PINs, OTPs, and account details should never be shared. Fraudsters often impersonate bank or government officials to extract sensitive data.
Avoid Rushed Transactions: If a person pressures you to make a payment immediately or demands urgent sharing of details, it is advisable to pause, verify the request, and take time before proceeding. Many scams rely on creating panic or urgency.
Monitor Alerts and Notifications: Enabling payment alerts via SMS or mobile apps can help users stay informed about transactions in real time. Any unfamiliar or unauthorized activity should be reported immediately to the concerned bank or app support.
With digital payment volumes growing steadily across India, authorities believe that spreading awareness about such preventive steps is crucial to building a safer digital ecosystem.
“Digital transactions are empowering, but users must stay informed and cautious. Simple checks can go a long way in safeguarding against fraud,” said a senior official from the digital payments industry.
