Due to heavy rains, operations at the Mumbai airport were suspended briefly on Monday morning.

Though no flights were cancelled, the aerodrome operator had to divert some flights to the nearby airports, an official told PTI.

“Runway operations at the Mumbai airport remained suspended for nearly 20 minutes on Monday morning due to heavy rains,” the official from the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said.

The services were stopped at 9.12 am and later resumed at 9.31 am.

Three city-bound flights were diverted from Mumbai during the period, the official said.

Heavy rains have caused delay and cancellations of flights earlier. It was on Tuesday that the main runway was closed. The Mumbai international airport authorities had said that it could take up to 48 hours to resume flight operations on the main runway.

This action was taken when a SpiceJet aircraft coming from Jaipur had overshot the runway while landing. It happened amid rains on Monday just before midnight.

None was injured in the incident.

The main runway was out of use and therefore the second runway was made operational.

Several flights have been diverted to other airports such as Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. Also, the bad weather conditions became reason to make a Korean Air flight KE655 divert to Ahmedabad. It was coming from Seoul to Mumbai.

Similarly, a Lufthansa flight LH756, which was coming from Frankfurt, and an Air India flight AI331, which was coming from Bangkok had to be diverted to other airports.
