In a significant push to bring India’s rural women into the fast-evolving AI economy, Saral Jeevan India Foundation, Frontier Markets, and Microsoft India on Friday announced a landmark partnership to equip 30,000 women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with AI skills.

The initiative — part of the expanding She Leads Bharat: Udyam programme — aims to build a scalable national model capable of empowering one million women entrepreneurs and reaching 100 million rural households by 2030.

Under this collaboration, 25,000 rural women entrepreneurs and 5,000 women trainers will receive AI-led digital literacy, business tools, and practical training designed to enhance their income, boost their entrepreneurial capacity, and prepare them for emerging opportunities in the digital and AI-driven economy.

India’s SHG ecosystem, one of the largest women-led community networks globally, comprises nearly 9 million SHGs and nearly 100 million rural women. With smartphone penetration rising sharply across rural India, the readiness for AI-led inclusion is rapidly accelerating. Yet, experts note that while digital access is improving, millions of rural women remain excluded from AI-driven economic opportunities. This initiative aims to bridge that gap.

The partnership builds upon the success of She Leads Bharat: Udyam, jointly implemented by Saral Jeevan India Foundation and Frontier Markets, which has empowered over 40,000 rural women entrepreneurs and delivered more than 10 crore essential solutions to 43 lakh rural households across 5,000 villages in five states. The initiative has been recognised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and supported by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, along with partners such as SAP, Apollo Tyres, and Saint-Gobain.

With Microsoft’s entry, the programme will integrate AI use cases and skilling modules into Frontier Markets’ Meri Saheli App as well as the WIDB platform. Training content will be localised in Hindi and Telugu, ensuring accessibility for women across diverse linguistic backgrounds.

These resources will also be shared with national and state rural development departments, including the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), which reaches over 100 million SHG women.

At a press conference here on Friday, Ajaita Shah, Founder and CEO of Frontier Markets, called the partnership a pivotal moment for rural women’s economic empowerment. “AI is reshaping every industry. Ensuring that rural women participate in and lead this transformation is critical. With Microsoft’s support, we are building a model that can be adopted nationwide and scaled to one million women entrepreneurs by 2030.”

Microsoft India’s CSR Lead, Manju Dhasmana, emphasised AI’s potential as a catalyst for gender equity. “AI must drive inclusion. This partnership ensures last-mile access so that rural women can use technology meaningfully to improve their livelihoods.”

Subhashini Chandran, Senior Vice President, Social Impact APEMEA at the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, highlighted the importance of collaborative philanthropy in driving long-term inclusion. “We are thrilled to see new partners joining to strengthen this initiative, which has already shown transformative impact for rural women-owned enterprises.”

As the partnership moves forward, She Leads Bharat stands poised to become a national model for gender-inclusive AI adoption and a beacon of scalable development for the Global South—leveraging technology, community networks, and cross-sector collaboration to transform rural women’s economic futures.
