The stock market on Thursday ended marginally higher, extending gains for a second session amid a volatile trade.
At close, the Sensex rose 57.75 points, or 0.07%, at 80,597.66, while the Nifty gained 11.95 points, or 0.05%, at 24,631.30.
The BSE Midcap index was down 0.2%, while the Smallcap index shed 0.6%.
Among the sectors, indices gave a mixed performance. Nifty Consumer Durables was the top gainer at 0.75%, followed by Nifty IT, which rose 0.4%. Metal and Realty were at the losing end, down 1.39% and 0.76%, respectively.
On the Nifty, around 20 stocks ended higher. The top gainers were Wipro (up 2%), Eternal (up 1.71%), and Infosys (up 1.50%).
The top losers were Tata Steel (down 2.81%), Adani Ports (down 1.38%), and Hero Moto (down 1.27%).
Around 122 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 106 stocks touched their 52-week lows.
Those on the highs included Anupam Rasayan India Ltd, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, Craftsman Automation Ltd, Delhivery Ltd, Eternal Ltd, Fortis Healthcare Ltd, HBL Engineering Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Muthoot Finance Ltd, Sai Life Sciences Ltd, TVS Motor Company Ltd, and Vishal Mega Mart Ltd.
The notable mentions on lows were Bata India Ltd, Cohance Lifesciences Ltd, Colgate Palmolive (India) Ltd, HFCL Ltd, and Jindal Saw Ltd.
According to exchange data, FPIs have sold Rs 22,264 crore worth of Indian stocks so far in August, while DIIs have purchased Rs 51,899 crore worth of Indian equities, more than offsetting the FPI outflows.
Investors remained cautious ahead of a high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The market will remain closed on Friday on account of Independence Day.
