Market ends lower amid broad-based selling; Nifty slips below 25,600

The stock market ended lower on Tuesday amid selling across sectors, barring telecom and consumer durables, with the Nifty closing below the 25,600 mark.

At the close, the Sensex was down 519.34 points, or 0.62%, at 83,459.15, while the Nifty declined 165.70 points, or 0.64%, to end at 25,597.65. The BSE Midcap index fell 0.2%, and the Smallcap index shed 0.7%.

The cumulative market capitalisation of firms listed on the BSE dropped below ₹470 lakh crore, compared to ₹472.5 lakh crore in the previous session.

Among sectors, barring the Nifty Consumer Durables index, which gained 0.39%, all others ended in the red. Nifty Metal and IT indices fell over 1% each, while the Auto index slipped nearly 1%. Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices declined up to 0.5%.

On the Nifty50 index, only eight stocks managed to close in the green. The top gainers were Titan Company, Bharti Airtel and Bajaj Finance, rising between 1–2%.

On the losing side, Power Grid Corporation, Eicher Motors and Adani Enterprises were among the top laggards, falling up to 3%. Out of 4,329 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,622 advanced, 2,540 declined, and 167 remained unchanged.

As many as 145 stocks hit their 52-week highs in intraday trade, while 91 touched their 52-week lows.

Stocks hitting new highs included SBI, Bharti Airtel, SBI Life Insurance, Titan Company, Shriram Finance, Indian Oil Corporation and BPCL.

Among those hitting new lows were KNR Constructions, Clean Science and Technology, Cohance Lifesciences, Delta Corp, H.G. Infra Engineering, Jindal Saw, Quess Corp and Westlife Foodworld.

Niva Bupa Health Insurance shares gained 3.16% following its Q2 results, while Hitachi Energy India surged 14% after a strong earnings report.

However, Hero MotoCorp came under pressure, plunging 4.3%. Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure also ended lower, losing 7% and 5%, respectively.

The market will remain closed on November 5 on account of Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
