The Uttar Pradesh Tax Department has taken a significant decision, conveniencing the taxpayers of the state. In-person hearings for large taxpayers will now be conducted virtually, and the arrangement will be effective from February 20.
The initiative aims to simplify the tax system, maximise the use of technology, and promote ease of doing business.
This decision has been taken to make the adjudication process more transparent, timely, and taxpayer-friendly. This arrangement will be implemented at the Joint Commissioner (Corporate) and Joint Commissioner (Corporate Cell – Oil Sector) levels.
On Friday, Principal Secretary, State Tax, Kamini Ratan Chauhan, stated that in-person hearings for taxpayers registered at the Joint Commissioner (Corporate) and Joint Commissioner (Corporate Cell – Oil Sector) levels in the state will be conducted virtually under normal circumstances. This process will be mandatory for all taxpayers registered at the Joint Commissioner (Corporate) and Joint Commissioner (Corporate Cell – Oil Sector) levels in Uttar Pradesh. This will be in accordance with various sections of the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
He stated that options will also be available for the taxpayer’s convenience. If a taxpayer or their authorised representative, for any specific reason, wishes to attend a hearing in person rather than virtually, their request will be considered, and the officer will provide them with the opportunity.
Dr Nitin Bansal, Commissioner, State Tax, Uttar Pradesh, stated that the Corporate Circle was established to provide better and easier services to large taxpayers. Currently, most GST-related work is being conducted through the online portal, but in some cases, personal presence is required.
He noted that taxpayers or their representatives were often unable to appear on time during physical hearings, leading to adjournments. Hearings were also sometimes affected due to official leave. This new system will expedite case resolution and save time, labour, and resources.
