In an initiative to strengthen healthcare services across Odisha’s mining belt, JSW Foundation conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for a 100-bed multi-speciality hospital at Koira.

The hospital is a dream project of JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal and Chairperson of JSW Foundation Sangita Jindal aimed at transforming healthcare access for communities residing in remote and underserved areas of Sundargarh and Keonjhar districts.

The initiative is being undertaken by JSW Foundation, the social development arm of JSW Group, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The ceremony was attended by Business Head of JSW Steel, Odisha Mining Division, Prasanna Panda; East Zone Head of JSW Foundation, Prasanta Biswal; HR Head of JSW Steel, Odisha Mining Division, Chittaranjan Bahanipati; and other senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Panda said, “This hospital is not just an infrastructure project; it is a commitment to the health, dignity and well-being of the communities around us. The people of Koira, Sundargarh and Keonjhar have long deserved access to quality medical care, and we are proud to take a meaningful step towards fulfilling that need. We believe this facility will create a lasting positive impact for generations.”

Spread across 4.5 acres, the upcoming facility will be constructed in a phased manner, starting with a 100-bed facility, housing multiple departments aimed at delivering quality and affordable healthcare to people in the region. For villagers in the mining areas of Koira, access to modern healthcare has long remained limited. The new hospital is expected to bridge this gap by providing services and infrastructure that were previously unavailable locally.

The hospital will offer specialised services, including orthopaedics, gynaecology, paediatrics, dermatology, ophthalmology, ENT, general medicine, etc. In addition, it will feature advanced diagnostic laboratories, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for medical tests. The project will also include residential and recreational facilities for doctors and medical staff within the hospital campus.

Given the high-risk nature of mining operations in the region, the hospital is expected to play a crucial role in responding to emergency and accident cases with timely and specialised treatment.

Biswal emphasised, “Healthcare accessibility in remote mining regions has always been a challenge. This project reflects our deep responsibility towards the communities that coexist with us. With specialised medical services, diagnostic facilities and a nursing training institute, this hospital will not only treat people but also empower local youth with opportunities in the healthcare sector.”

The establishment of the Koira Multi-Speciality Hospital stands as a strong testament to JSW’s long-term commitment to improving community well-being and enabling a healthier future for rural and mining-affected areas of Odisha.

JSW Foundation has been implementing a number of social development projects, including health, education, sanitation, drinking water, sports, etc., across mining-affected villages of Joda and Koida blocks.
