India’s industrial production accelerated sharply in June 2026, with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) growing 7.3 per cent year-on-year, driven by robust manufacturing activity and double-digit growth in the electricity sector, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
The June growth was higher than the revised 5.1 per cent expansion recorded in May 2026. Manufacturing, which carries the highest weight in the IIP, grew 7.8 per cent during the month, while electricity and gas supply expanded by 10.6 per cent. Mining and quarrying output increased by 1 per cent, while water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation services registered a growth of 6.1 per cent.
The Quick Estimate of the IIP stood at 123.1 in June 2026, compared with 114.7 in the corresponding month last year. Sector-wise, the indices stood at 110.0 for mining, 123.3 for manufacturing, 131.0 for electricity, and 145.7 for water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation services.
Within manufacturing, 19 of the 23 industry groups at the two-digit National Industrial Classification (NIC-2025) level recorded positive growth over June 2025. The biggest contributors to overall industrial growth were the manufacture of electrical equipment, which expanded by 34 per cent, followed by the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers at 17.5 per cent, and the manufacture of food products at 10.8 per cent.
Among the use-based categories, capital goods output increased by 14.2 per cent, indicating continued investment activity, while primary goods grew by 4.9 per cent. Intermediate goods recorded a 9.3 per cent rise, and infrastructure and construction goods expanded by 7.5 per cent. Consumer durables and consumer non-durables both registered growth of 4.9 per cent.
MoSPI said the estimates were based on weighted response rates of 86.7 per cent for June 2026 and 93.1 per cent for the final revision of May 2026. The ministry also revised the May 2026 IIP data based on updated information received from source agencies.
