India outpace Japan to become world’s 2nd largest steel producer

Stainless steel production in India has recorded a new high by becoming world’s second largest stainless steel producer after China.

According to data released by the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), India surpassed Japan as the second biggest stainless steel producer in 2016. The data was released at an annual conference held between 14 and 19 May 2017 at Tokyo, Japan.

It is significant to note that India’s stainless steel production rose to 3.32 million tonnes for 2016 showing a growth of about 9 per cent over 3 million tonnes in 2015.

Attending the ISSF annual conference, KK Pahuja, President, Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) said, “This is a great moment for the Indian stainless steel industry. ISSDA urges the government to continue the policy support to take the Indian stainless steel industry to newer heights. ISSDA will continue to work with all stakeholders for sustainability and growth.”

The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) is a non-profit research and development organisation that was founded in 1996 and which serves as the focal point for the international stainless steel industry.
