Fuel prices rose sharply across India on Tuesday, with petrol and diesel becoming costlier by nearly 90 paise per litre in several cities, adding to the burden on consumers already hit by a recent nationwide increase.

The latest revision comes just days after the Centre raised fuel prices by ₹3 per litre on May 15, as global oil markets remain under pressure due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Crude prices have stayed elevated amid concerns over supply disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key oil transit routes.

In the national capital, petrol price climbed by 87 paise to ₹98.64 per litre, while diesel became dearer by 91 paise and is now retailing at ₹91.58 per litre.

Mumbai saw petrol prices rise by 91 paise to ₹107.59 per litre. Diesel in the city also became costlier by 94 paise, taking the rate to ₹94.08 per litre.

In Chennai, petrol touched ₹104.49 per litre after an increase of 82 paise. Diesel prices in the city rose by 86 paise to ₹96.11 per litre.

Kolkata recorded one of the steepest hikes among metros. Petrol price increased by 96 paise to ₹109.70 per litre, while diesel went up by 94 paise to ₹96.07 per litre.

Jaipur too witnessed a notable jump in fuel rates. Petrol became costlier by 94 paise and is now priced at ₹108.91 per litre. Diesel prices in the Rajasthan capital rose by 92 paise to ₹94.15 per litre.

Why fuel prices are rising again

The fresh increase in domestic fuel prices comes against the backdrop of soaring global crude oil prices triggered by the US-Israel-Iran conflict, which began earlier this year and has continued to fuel uncertainty in energy markets.

Brent crude has been trading above USD 100 per barrel amid fears of prolonged instability in the region. Concerns over shipping routes and fuel supply chains have also intensified after disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the global uncertainty, the Indian government has maintained that the country has sufficient fuel reserves and there is no immediate shortage of energy supplies.

Fuel rates revised for second time in less than a week

Tuesday’s revision marks the second fuel price increase in under a week.

On May 15, petrol and diesel prices across the country were increased by ₹3 per litre each. Following that revision, petrol prices in Delhi had risen from ₹94.77 to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel moved from ₹87.67 to ₹90.67 per litre.

The latest increase now takes petrol prices in Delhi close to the ₹100 mark once again.

The fuel price data was released by oil marketing companies on Tuesday.
