KOLKATA, 7 JUNE: Close on the heels of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Thailand, and considering the Centre’s ‘Look East’ policy Union Minister for DoNER, Mr Paban Singh Ghatowar, is heading a 30-member business delegation from North-East India to Thailand and Cambodia when bilateral investment opportunities are likely to be discussed with relevant ministries and chambers of commerce.
Three industry ministers from Assam, Mizoram and Nagaland, Mr Pradyut Bardoloi, Mr Hiato and Mr Phom Pangnyu respectively, will accompany the Union minister along with their officials and local entrepreneurs.
The tour from 12 June to 18 June, has been organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) with active participation of the ministry of DoNER, Indian Embassies and leading chambers of commerce in these two countries.
The planned visit to Thailand seems to have been triggered by the recent visit of Mr Nalinee Taveesin, Thailand’s minister for investment in the Prime Minister’s Office, who visited the North-East with the objective of strengthening business ties and had talks with some of the state governments.
The secretary of DoNER, Mr UK Sangma and a senior joint secretary are expected to accompany Mr Ghatowar for the discussions abroad. Programmes are being chalked out for the delegation’s visit to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Bangkok with the help of the Indian Embassies in the respective countries.
Considering the social and cultural affinity between North-East India, Thailand and Cambodia and the goodwill created so far by the exchange of visits of high level government and private individuals, the Indian Chamber of Commerce feels that there is a need to supplement the efforts with long-term agenda for trade and commerce, commensurate with India’s Look East policy.
While North-East India and Thailand have taken significant strides in building bridges in the field of trade and commerce over the years, India’s excellent political relations with Cambodia continues to provide a fertile ground for growth of economic ties.
