The department of mathematics, University of North Bengal, on Monday inaugurated the week-long training programme “Initiation into Mathematics (InitMath) 2025” at the department’s seminar hall. The academic event is being organised by the department of mathematics with financial support from the MTTS Trust (NBHM of central government).
Prof. Bhaskar Biswas, registrar (acting) of the university, attended the ceremony as the chief guest. In his address, he congratulated the department for organising the initiative and extended his best wishes for the success of the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Palash Paul, development officer of the University, highlighted the academic achievements of the department and encouraged students to pursue higher studies in Mathematics at NBU.
Prof. Bhaba Kumar Sarma, professor at IIT Guwahati, convener of the InitMath programmes, and Resource Person for InitMath 2025, appreciated the department’s efforts in hosting the event and expressed hope that such academic initiatives would continue to nurture young mathematical minds.
Among others present were Prof. M N Roy (former dean, Faculty Council for Science), Dr Mriganka Mondal (librarian), Dr Rupak Bhattacharyya (secretary, Faculty Council for PG Studies in Arts, Commerce and Law), Prof Dhiren Kumar Basnet (Tezpur University), and Dr Deepjyoti Goswami (Tezpur University), along with faculty members and students of the department.
The inaugural session concluded by Dr Sujay Kr. Biswas, local coordinator of InitMath 2025, who expressed gratitude to the MTTS Trust, dignitaries, and all contributors for their support and cooperation.
The week-long training programme has brought together 45 meritorious students from West Bengal and four neighbouring states, who will participate in intensive mathematical learning, problem-solving sessions, and interactions with eminent mathematicians throughout the week.
