A brilliantly spun, mellifluously woven novel, A Spool of Blue Thread takes us on an adventurous journey along the lovelorn paths of life strewn with the secrets, fears and multifarious emotions of a traditional American family.

Through her distinguished lucid yet scintillating way of writing, Tylor has succeeded in painting a homely atmosphere with tinges of fleeting yet heartrending hues of nostalgia, through four generations of the Whitshank family. Starting from the time Abby and Red sketched their own stories in their beautiful home at Baltimore, the story spools back through generations to the time when Redcliffe’s parents Junior and Linnie Mae first migrated to Baltimore to build their dream house.

The story revolves around the indiscreet secrets, the unspoken emotions, coloured thoughts and suppressed passions that have altogether made up the essence of this closely knit family.

The account delivers the message of the heartfelt bonding human beings have with each other as well as their roots and how the humane ties often go beyond the blood relations that limit our expectations from life. It elucidates the complications in human relationships besides offering the readers a vicarious taste of romance.

The pangs of loneliness, of lost motherhood, of unparalleled simplicity and loyalty, are portrayed through tender notes that often tend to pass unnoticed.

The sacrifice one soul needs to make throughout life to pay for a single mistake, the love and devotion, destined never to be valued, the rejection of a child by her mother – all these find a place for themselves in a colourful collage.

Side by side, the book also provides a sharp insight into the Western norms, culture and traditions – their festivals, ceremonies and lifestyle and varied outlooks.

It exposes their broad-mindedness on one hand and cavalier demeanour and lack of self-control on the other, which demarcates them from the Eastern civilisation.

Above all, it is a marvellous creation which will definitely help teenagers to grow and mature from within.
