Two days after West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar had slammed the Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das for his handling of the situation arising out of the gherao and heckling of Union minister Babul Supriyo by a section of students on the university campus, the Governor today visited the VC at a private hospital and said he would work together with him to create the “best suitable” environment for the students.

Supriyo, meanwhile, in a tweet assured the mother of a student, who had reportedly got involved in heckling him that he had not lodged any FIR against him. Dhankar also met the pro- VC P K Ghosh, who was admitted at the same hospital. “The VC is in good shape and willing to return home. He also said that once he is back at work, he will have an interactive session with the students,” the governor told the media.

A press communiqué issued by the Raj Bhavan stated, “The chancellor indicated that as guardian he will engage into all out effort to interact with students, faculty and the management, so that the university is put in the growth trajectory and wholesome environment for education is available to the students who are future of the nation.” Supriyo stated the student’s mother is a cancer patient and she became extremely worried after the video showing her son, along with several other students, manhandling the minister, went viral in social media.

“Do not worry masima (aunty). I will do no harm towards your son. I just want that he gets lesson from his mistakes,” he tweeted. Senior state minister Subrata Mukherjee, meanwhile, caused an embarrassment to the ruling party by criticising the VC’s refusal to call the police during the gherao. This contradicts the government’s stand supporting the VC’s position.
