West Bengal began voting today for 142 Assembly seats, but the day did not start quietly. Early in the morning, allegations of violence surfaced from the Nadia district, adding tension to an already crucial phase of the election. At the same time, voters stepped out across districts, forming queues at polling stations as the state recorded a steady turnout in the first few hours.

Alleged attack on booth agent sparks political row

A serious allegation has been raised by BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar, who claimed that a party booth agent was attacked in the Nadia-Chhapra Assembly constituency. According to him, the incident reflects a larger pattern of intimidation.

The alleged attack took place around 5:30 in the morning, just before voting picked up pace. BJP polling agent Mosharraf Mir, assigned to booth number 52 under Hatra Panchayat, was reportedly assaulted by a group of unidentified people. The attackers were said to be armed with iron rods and firearms.

Police officials reached the spot, rescued Mir, and took him to Chapra Rural Hospital. Doctors treated him for injuries, and he received six stitches on his head. He is currently under medical care.

Sarkar alleged that such incidents are to scare BJP workers and stop them from performing their election duties. He described the area as sensitive and claimed that party agents are often prevented from entering booths. He has demanded strict action against those involved and called on authorities to ensure the safety of polling staff and political workers.

Voter turnout begins steadily across districts

Despite the tension, voting continued across the state. By 9:00 am, West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 18.39 percent for this phase.

Some districts saw higher participation than others. Purba Bardhaman led the chart with 20.86 percent turnout, followed closely by Hooghly at 20.16 percent. Nadia reported 18.50 percent voting, while North 24 Parganas stood at 17.81 percent.

In urban areas, turnout was slightly lower. Kolkata North recorded 17.28 percent. Kolkata South saw 16.81 percent voting. Howrah registered 17.76 percent.
