Waterlogging in most suburban towns

Continuous rainfall has led to severe waterlogging in most suburban towns of the district. Many roads, particularly in low-lying areas, are submerged, causing significant inconvenience to local residents. The worst-affected towns include Dankuni, Uttarpara, Konnagar, Rishra, Serampore, Seoraphuli, Baidyabati, Chinsurah, Bandel, among others.

Residents have widely complained that improper road levelling and an outdated drainage system are to blame. The existing drains are unable to cope with the high volume of rainwater during heavy showers. Regular flushing and cleaning of drains and sewers are reportedly neglected, leaving many drains partially blocked and resulting in stagnant water for several days.

As part of beautification projects, drains have been covered and footpaths constructed for pedestrian safety. However, unauthorised kiosks and shops have encroached upon these footpaths, blocking access to manholes. Consequently, closed drains remain unmaintained, and with no proper outlets, rainwater accumulates on the roads.

Civic body heads from some municipalities have acknowledged that low-lying areas often suffer from waterlogging. However, they emphasised that the issue cannot be resolved by the municipality alone. “We need active public cooperation,” said a municipal official. “Despite awareness campaigns, people continue to use plastic bags and dispose of garbage, including plastic, into the drains—causing severe blockages. Drainage and sewerage system upgrades are being implemented in phases, and we hope the situation will improve soon.”

Daily railway commuters have also expressed frustration, stating that railway subways regularly get flooded during rain. They urged the railway authorities to take immediate steps to ensure subways remain free from waterlogging.
