The Trinamool Congress Bhawan in Kolkata’s Metropolitan area is finally being vacated. Reports indicate that the process of removing furniture from the first and second floors of the building started on Tuesday.
Sources within the TMC claimed that the TMC is voluntarily shifting its office elsewhere. According to local residents, some minitrucks were parked in front of the building since Tuesday night, which left the spot with office equipment like chairs, tables, flex banners, posters, and other materials, early morning on Wednesday.
The lower floors of the building housed seating arrangements for party workers from various districts, as well as a media centre.
Who owns TMC Bhawan
The five-storey building is owned by Manotosh Saha, also known as Montu Saha, whose company, Modern Decorators, was earlier in charge of building makeshift stages for various TMC party events, including the one for the party’s annual 21 July Martyrs’ Day gathering in Dharmatala.
However, relations between Montu Saha and the TMC reportedly deteriorated after the party’s recent drubbing in the Assembly election results following which he asked the party to vacate the building. He had claimed that TMC had failed to leave the premises despite repeated requests, even going to the extent of warning that he would approach the Pragati Maidan police station.
Responding to these charges, senior TMC leaders, including Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh and the party’s state president Chandrima Bhattacharya, visited the police station and submitted rent receipts and other relevant documents.
Party sources claimed that a valid agreement was in place which allowed the building to be used by the party until 2027. They said that the building’s owners started raising objections to the agreement after the party’s electoral defeat.
Renovation work is currently underway at the old Trinamool Bhawan building in Kolkata’s Uttar Panchanan Gram, which started off after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Since then, the Metropolitan building served as the party’s temporary state headquarters.
In Delhi, a portion of the official bungalow of Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmick was being used as the party’s office at the national capital since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After Bhowmick reportedly distanced himself from the party and moved closer to the rebel camp led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the TMC office in Delhi was relocated. The new office has now been set up in a portion of the bungalow of Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque.
