At least three persons were killed and 10 others seriously injured when a Hili-bound bus slipped in a roadside ditch near Malancha village in the Balurghat police station area of South Dinajpur district last night. One of the deceased was identified as Jay Laha (18). He was a Class XII student of local Teor High School while the identity of two others is not known, police said.
Among the injured, there were six men and four women, police said. The injured persons were immediately taken to Balurghat district hospital with the help of locals and police.
Local residents staged a blockade at Balurghat-Hili state highway-10, protesting against the unhindered menace of reckless driving. They alleged that the traffic police appear to be sleeping over the problem. They lifted the blockade after police intervened and assured the agitators of action. The bodies of the victims were sent for post-mortem at Balurghat district hospital this morning, police informed.
