Durgapur, 1 October: A survey has been planned to help explore avenues for the shifting of high-tension power cables passing through the Andal airport runway.
Senior administrative officials, including the ADM (Land Acquisition), Burdwan, power department officials, panchayat officials, engineers with the private promoter agency assigned for the erection of the airport and police held a meeting towards this end at the Durgapur SDM’s office today.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the naming ceremony of the airport on 20 September. The airport has been named after Kazi Nazrul Islam.
The start of flight services has been delayed five times over as the project has run into rough weather. The promoters of the much-hyped Aerotropolis are at loggerheads over stakes, and the Director General of Civil Aviation has refused to give clearance for regular flight services as the high-tension power cables cutting through the runway haven’t been removed as yet. A senior official said: “We are eager to sort out this crisis as it may ruin the fate of our project if further delays are incurred.”
Durgapur SDM Kasturi Sengupta later told The Statesman: "Primary survey work would begin for the purpose from 3 October, with the active help of panchayats.” SNS
