SMPK-CSL partnership to strengthen India’s ship repair ecosystem

In yet another milestone underscoring Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata’s (SMPK) commitment to promoting shipbuilding and ship repair in India, Rathendra Raman, Chairman, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata visited the Ship Repair Facility of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) at Cochin to explore deeper collaboration between the two maritime institutions.

During the visit, Madhu Nair, Chairman and Managing Director, CSL, handed over the cheque of Rs 5.94 crore, representing the shared profit to Rathendra Raman, under the joint venture partnership of CKSRU (Cochin- Kolkata Ship Repair Unit). The joint venture, established between SMPK and CSL, has emerged as a significant contributor to strengthening ship repair capabilities on the eastern coast.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Raman, said: “The Rs 5.94 crore profit generated through ship repair by CKSRU clearly demonstrates the commercial and strategic potential of indigenous ship repair facilities. Our partnership with Cochin Shipyard Limited shows how collaboration between port authorities and shipyards can deliver sustainable infrastructure, strong revenues and support the ‘Make in India’ vision. We are keen to further expand ship repair activities at Kolkata and build on this success.”

The visit reaffirmed the shared vision of SMPK and CSL to enhance indigenous ship repair capacity, improve operational efficiency, and position Indian ports and shipyards as competitive hubs in the global maritime industry.
