Seven persons, including six police personnel were killed and one village policeman was critically injured when the vehicle, in which they were travelling, collided with a rice-laden lorry at Bramhapur in the Maynaguri police station in Jalpaiguri district around 5:30 a.m. today.
The deceased were identified as assistant sub-inspector Amit Monger, constables Gopal De Sarkar and Madan Chhetri, village police Rejaul Karim, Samiul Islam, Partha Sarkar and private driver Rajesh Sheikh. Another critically injured village policeman, Mr M Haque, was referred to a private nursing home in Siliguri and later it was decided that he should shifted to Kolkata.
All seven cops were coming from Cooch Behar and they were on their way to Malda to receive Central forces for the rural polls.
According to police sources, the driver lost control over his speeding vehicle as a rice-laden lorry came in front of it.  The lorry was on its way to Cooch Behar. Of the seven two deceased were residents of Jalpaiguri but posted in Cooch Behar.
Jalpaiguri police handed the five bodies over to their relatives, who came from the Cooch Behar area.
 Police made arrangements to pay tribute to two of the deceased police personnel.
