MIDNAPORE, 20 JUNE: Ahead of the panchayat polls, posters issued in the name of the Maoists were recovered at a few places in Jhargram in West Midnapore today. The posters, which were put up at public places, trees and road-side buildings, have threatened Trinamul Congress leaders in Junglemahal saying they would soon be brought before Gana-adalat (public court) where they would be tried.
Police said while one set of posters threatened Trinamul Congress leaders saying they would be tried in public court; the other warned the Trinamul leaders that they would be punished for their roles in the brutal murder of a tribal woman in Jhargram last month.
Though the Jhargram police did not consider it a serious threat, the posters have created a sensation among local people.
Mrs Bharati Ghosh, superintendent of police, Jhargram, said: “We’re  investigating whether the posters were actually written by Maoists.”
Police officials said the posters were put up under the banner of CPI(M-L) Maoist which has no existence in Junglemahal. “But, we are leaving no stone unturned in taking special precautionary measures in Junglemahal, especially before the panchayat polls,” said the police official.
Meanwhile, half a dozen Trinamul Congress leaders in West Midnapore have been provided special security cover after last month&’s carnage in Chhattisgarh. The TMC leaders living in Junglemahal have already been provided personal security in view of the perceived threat to their lives. “If we find out that the front-ranking Trinamul Congress leaders are actually living under threat, we will provide special security to them,” a senior police officer said. sns
