The Kolkata Police have started a fraud case following complaints from Lok Bhavan that a caller was contacting various officials from a particular mobile number impersonating Governor RN Ravi.
The caller, posing as the Governor, was issuing directives or putting in requests about certain tasks to be performed.
The Governor’s Secretary, Soumitra Mohan, on Friday lodged a formal complaint with the Cybercrime Division of the Kolkata Police, prompting the cops to start a case.
The complaint states that the individual, using the mobile number 9836540163 has been calling prominent figures, top government officials, and others while identifying himself as the Governor of West Bengal. He was then issuing instructions, making requests and giving messages. The complaint states the act of the said individual not only constitutes fraud but also potentially compromises the Governor’s constitutional status and administrative security.
Mohan has written to the Deputy Commissioner of the Kolkata Police, Cybercrime Cell, requesting a swift investigation into the matter. Additionally, Mohan also asked for the implementation of necessary technical and preventive measures to stop such fraudulent calls in the future.
Lok Bhavan has issued a warning to government officials and the general public, advising them not to take any action based on suspicious or unsolicited calls or messages claiming to be from the Governor or any Lok Bhavan official without proper verification. Recipients of such calls, or anyone possessing information regarding this impersonation, have been requested to promptly notify Lok Bhavan. Contact numbers are: 033-2200-1641 to 1644; E-mail: generalcellgs@gmail.com.
The police are verifying the details associated with the mobile number. All police stations have been alerted.
