Kolkata, 15 July: In light of the recent order of the Supreme Court to the Centre to consider moving the National Green Tribunal from Kolkata to Guwahati, city based environmentalists feared that thousands of environment related cases that were pending before the Calcutta High Court would never be redressed or resolved because of shifting of the tribunal.
On 9 July the Supreme Court expressed its anguish over the “Thorough non-cooperation” of the West Bengal government in setting up a bench of the tribunal at Kolkata and directed the Centre accordingly.
Eminent environment activists, including Subhas Dutta, Naba Dutta and Sujoy Basu have sent letters to the Supreme Court, the Centre and National Green Tribunal requesting them reconsider the proposed move. The environmentalists think that shifting of the tribunal from Kolkata to Guwahati would undermine its importance in the state. sns
