Muchipara Traffic Guard and the Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC) today jointly intercepted an overloaded truck carrying garbage and imposed a penalty of Rs 7,000 for polluting city roads.
The incident occurred this morning when a truck laden with waste was travelling from Burdwan through Purulia en route to Odisha. Local residents have long complained that such overloaded vehicles spill waste onto the roads, leaving them dirty and unhygienic.
Traffic police chased the vehicle and stopped it near the canal of the Durgapur barrage. Senior officials from the DMC, Muchipara Traffic Guard and Coke Oven police station later arrived at the site.
The Muchipara Traffic Guard of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate fined the truck Rs 5,000 for dangerous driving, while DMC officials imposed an additional Rs 2,000 penalty for littering the city.
Biswajit Bhagat, an official of Borough IV of the DMC, said police and civic authorities are working together to intercept such vehicles. “We are keeping a close watch on the situation and will not tolerate overloaded garbage trucks that make our city look ugly and pollute the environment,” he added.
