Over 300 held in Siliguri in pre-Christmas crackdown

In a crackdown it launched on the eve of Christmas, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police (SMP) arrested 321 persons for different offenses until figures were last had at 9.30 pm today.

Police said the special drive will continue till 1 January. Police personnel would, meanwhile, be posted in crowded areas in and outside restaurants, food-joints and malls to prevent any untoward incident during the festive season.

“We have arrested 321 persons (until 9.30 pm today) in a special drive launched on the eve of Christmas. They have been booked under different charges, including drunken frenzy, violation of traffic rules, creating public nuisance and gambling. We have registered cases and imposed fines amounting to Rs 1,97750 for violating traffic rules on both two wheelers and four wheelers,” said Commissioner of Siliguri Police Niraj Kumar Singh.

Mr. Singh said that in order to maintain law and order and security, police inspected arrangements at 53 hotels, 13 guest houses, 19 roadside eateries, and six shopping malls yesterday. Traffic police registered 587 cases, and hundreds of vehicles were checked at different road sections.

“A similar drive would be conducted daily until New Year’s Day. There will be necessary security arrangements to ensure peaceful celebrations of the New Year. Plainclothes police personnel, women police personnel, apart from uniformed cops have been deputed. In a meeting with hotels and malls, we have asked them to ensure their own security mechanism also,” Mr. Singh added.

Police officials said they were scanning footages of CC TV cameras installed across the town to study the movement of the crowd. Police have set up 82 such surveillance cameras in the first phase as part of the plan of installing 105 cameras.
