SILIGURI, 11 JUNE: The Governor, Mr M K Narayanan, has said he favours deployment of Central forces for the panchayat polls.
Speaking to reporters at Bagdogra Airport on his way to Kalimpong, the Governor said efforts are being made to bring Central forces. He said he was hopeful that there would be free and fair polls. “We are trying to ensure peaceful election without any violence,” he said. Asked whether Central forces are required for conducting polls peacefully, he said: “The additional force is required.” He added he will make efforts to ensure that the state gets Central forces.
Mr Narayanan is scheduled to meet Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) representatives in Darjeeling tomorrow. GTA executive committee member Roshan Giri said they will discuss the functioning of the GTA and the development of GTA areas. sns
