Commuters obstructing the doors of Metro coaches could now face a penalty. The Kolkata Metro Railway has warned of strict action or even penalty for commuters posing obstruction in closing the doors of Metro coaches.
The city Metro declared the ‘stern action’ after a woman passenger tried to obstruct the door of a coach in the Yellow Line on 13 December. The incident occurred in door number two of coach number 5054 of a Metro rake numbered MR-514, bound for Noapara from Jai Hind Bimanbandar in Yellow Line. According to the information shared by the city Metro office, the woman commuter intentionally obstructed the closure of the door to let her companion catch that train at Dum Dum Cantonment station. This is said to have led to forced delay of that service while causing inconvenience to other passengers. Sensing the obstruction, the motorman of that rake had to move from his seat and manually lock it after which that train could resume its journey.
As learnt, the city Metro authorities are said to have initiated appropriate steps to identify the offender and take appropriate action as per rules.
The incident drew strict reactions from the authorities. Issuing a Press communiqué, the Kolkata Metro Railway has reiterated that ‘obstruction of doors by any means such as by backpack, by physical force, leaning on the door to obstruct its functioning etc. shall also attract a penalty.’
Requesting cooperation of all the commuters, the Kolkata Metro Railway made an appeal to all to refrain from doing such things in the Metro premises. ‘With the help of CCTV cameras installed in the rakes and stations, such activities can be recorded easily and offenders can be identified. Actions as deem fit will be initiated against any person found to be engaged in such activities,’ said the communiqué.
